CrossOver Session Five: "Why two check-boxes are simply not enough"

Now online (MP3, 4.4 MB, 18 minutes 55 seconds) - in which I discuss my perspective on why society's insistence on a strictly male or female view of the world simply isn't enough. This session includes a short excerpt from Dr. Moira Gunn's interview with Deborah Rudicille of Johns-Hopkins University, which can be downloaded from the "IT Conversations" web site (included under the terms of the Creative Commons Sampling License). See the shownotes (HTML, OPML) for relevant links.

I completely agree with your points here. I struggle with my own gender identity as it changes over time and hell, from day to day -- and it boggles my mind that most people seem unable or unwilling to even acknowledge that complexity, or the basic fact that there's a continuum.

I tend to see this as part of a larger context in which (particularly Western) society seems to have this need to categorize, put things into little boxes and hierarchies so we can stuff them away and forget about them. It's ludicrous, because everything is pure change all the time -- but we're still banging our heads against the wall trying to lock everything down so we can have the illusion of control. So - there's a fear of not being able to understand actual complexity, and a reductionism... and I think there's also a basic aversion to spending time on things like cultivating the emotional and mental growth it requires to overcome those old thought habits. Add to that all the history and baggage of sexism and homophobia, and all the historically religious puritanism that says even thinking or talking about any of this stuff openly is taboo. It's a freaking mess, still.

But then -- here's your podcast and here's all of these genderqueer, trans, and queer voices of all flavors getting a platform on the web... we've got to be moving in the right direction. Anywho -- this was a bit of my own waxing lyrical, and part of my devious and diabolical plan to sow optimism everywhere!! :) Enjoyed the podcast, thanks!
